yamagata in situ

Yeah... I like the lighting in this one, but the scene is a bit empty.. If i have time I'll draw an old jukebox on the wall in the background, just like in the beginning of 'Akira'..

Buzz in situ

Another in situ.. Don't think it worked as well as the last one, but I like the colour contrast.

Tetsuo in situ

self explanatory...

When I drew this I was had in mind the scene where Tetsuo escapes the military lab facility / compound / thing, and the colour palette for the bg was gonna be greens like in the film, but when I scanned in the craters and raised their contrast, it made the piece blue which I ran with.

the craters are a bit out of perspective and not entirely bowl shaped, but I think it works pretty well as a roughish in situ...

Promo image background and depth test

This is the background for my final promotional image... It's inspired by the artwork of Scott Wills, who has worked on numerous animation productions, notably 'Samurai Jack' and 'Ren and Stimpy'.. Here's his blog: http://animationbgs.blogspot.com/

colour variant

I downloaded some sponge-like texture brushes and used them to create a roughish grungy sort of effect.
I'm relatively happy with the result.. though it is a bit sharp n pixelly

I've also began to look at how I'm going to add a greater sense of depth using scale and focus.
For the final promo image I plan to have all 5 redesigned characters posed casually around the carriage, one of them sitting down, one maybe leaning etc... all looking tough as shit.

Shout out to my classmate Mike Jones (not sure if he has a blog) who introduced me to Scott Will's work in one sense or another.

The beginning of the redesigned Akira redesigns...

So I haven't uploaded anything for a while... In short, I've been slack.. Comic Wednesday never happened neither... Here's my redesign of the Yamagata character from 'Akira'.

This is what he looked like before
Dont look too long... and dont bother reading all that crap..

This is what he looks like now

Took a picture of myself as pose reference...
I'm happy with how it turned out.. Now to make the others look as good.

This is the character as he looks in the anime, for reference...

Here's the other heads..

I still have Kaneda, Tetsuo, and kei to draw... I gave Tetsuo a more softer, innocent look as he stands at the beginning of the film, before he's corrupted by power and goes insane. he's the one in the middle.

First comic wednesday entry

Here it is... rough start, but I'll try harder next week.

Also, failed to buy a comic today. Was gonna pick up a Guy Davis B.P.R.D. issue but had no money... so that sucked. Have yet to read a Scott McCloud chapter... Something tells me that's not gonna happen either.

Great start... But next week's gonna be awesome no matter what!

Wednesday = comic day

I've wanted to try and create a comic for a long time now, but I've always been too busy with either work or laziness (mostly the later)... So I've finally found what I needed and, I've decided that -

(suspense space)

Wednesday of every week (starting tomorrow), I will sit down and make something that resembles a comic, whether it be a tree panel strip, or a whole page of something greater, Wednesday is now officially comic day... I don't know how this is going to go down, but I hope for all my loyal fans (he knows who he is) it's something entertaining and enjoyable and yeah. F**k yeah! Comic day! The other part of this awesome day of the week that I just came up with just now is, during that same day, I'll go buy myself a comic book... not like a trade, but a comic comic. For learning. I'll also read a chapter from either 'Understanding Comics' or 'Making Comics' by Scott McCloud. I've read 'Understanding Comics' in it's entirety but I feel like there's more to be learnt in that book... To be fair I don't think it all sunk in. So, yeah. Get on that. If you don't know Scott McCloud and his work, and you really love comics, check him out. Highly recommended.

So just like that, with just that little push, my life is finally on track. I've had all these ideas floating around in my head for a while now, so hopefully wednesdays are now gonna help me exorcize some demons.

Also heads up, new blog banner featuring the outback and an alien life form with a southern accent.

colour script... yeah

A colour script for a title sequence animatic based on 'Double Indemnity' (1944).

Viewtiful Kaneda

Yeah so I decided to study some characters from Katsuhiro Otomo's 'Akira' (1988), for my character redesign project at uni....
I was inspired by Kumiko Suekane's work on the 'Viewtiful Joe' video game franchise.

Viewtiful Joe artwork by Suekane... "RED HOT KIIICKK!" I know he's not doing that move but yeah.

Somebody learn me a thing or two about character redesign...

What's the difference between "fanart" and character redesign?.. I suppose fanart is a strictly cosmetic rehash, but you can't always be sure... Whereas I think character redesign changes both the 'character' and the visual design aspects. With that in mind it feels like what's being asked of me for this latest project is to not simply change the look of a well known character, but literally f**ken change everything about the character.. Or perhaps show it in a different light... But I may as well be doing a character design project if that's the case...

What if I don't want to change the 'character' aspect of the character? I don't mean to sound know-it-all arrogant, but I'm sure with modern character adaptations to the animation industry, they mustn't stray too far away from the already well established 'character' aspect... Especially if the whole purpose of the move to animation in the first place is because the show is really f**ken popular and has a thriving fanbase... Why change anything if the money's raking in?... You could argue that 'character' redesign is done to broaden the show's market appeal, and I reckon that'd be right, but for how far? I think it's mostly, if not solely cosmetic.

Also surely a character redesign project where we get to chose a character of our choice (a personal favourite) and draw it, that's fanart!! ... I'm confused...

Anyway here's my first rough full on depiction of Eric Powell's 'The Goon', looking very much like the Goon... Too much it seems. I'm not happy with it yet.. and I'm thinking of going an elaborate pen tool route again, cause you know, i love that stuff. And it would lend itself well to flash animation.

Here's a picture of the actual Goon for reference.

I feel like being on an art course everything boils down to personal opinion... And because of that I sometimes find it hard to learn..

tell me what you think, I won't bite your face off I swear, I'm just not sure what's being asked of me and am a bit confused.

(for the record I don't know anything about the industry... This is all speculation and thinking out loud)
by god this is almost like a diary, but i don't care. I don't care 'bout nothin'.
